Abstract: The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) and its constituent technologies, frameworks, and tools is immensely impacting our societies. Hence, this paper explores how artificial intelligence (AI) can be leveraged to advance a sustainable and responsible future across environmental, social, and governance dimensions. We develop a conceptual framework that links core AI capabilities, e.g., prediction, optimisation, pattern discovery, and autonomy, to key sustainability objectives such as decarbonisation, circular resource use, and social inclusion. Drawing on illustrative cases from energy, mobility, healthcare, and public services, we examine both enabling impacts, e.g., efficiency gains, early warning systems, personalised interventions, and rebound effects that may undermine net benefits. The study integrates insights from responsible AI, data governance, and sustainability science to propose design principles for “sustainability-by-default” AI systems, including value-sensitive objective functions, transparent data provenance, and lifecycle impact assessment of models and infrastructures. We argue that aligning AI with planetary boundaries and social foundations requires shifting from isolated pilot projects to system-level governance involving regulators, industry, and affected communities. The paper concludes with a research agenda highlighting open questions on metrics, accountability mechanisms, and cross-border coordination. By articulating pathways, risks, and governance levers, this work positions AI not as an automatic solution, but as a contested socio-technical tool that must be deliberately steered toward just and sustainable futures.
