Purpose: This paper develops a human-centred governance framework for ethical artificial intelligence use and sustainability capability development in higher education.
Design/methodology/approach: A PRISMA-guided systematic review of 91 peer-reviewed studies published between 2020 and 2025 was conducted using structured screening, quality assessment, and thematic synthesis.
Findings: Governance responses, including transparency, explainability, human oversight, accountability, proportional monitoring, participatory design, and appeal mechanisms, are integrated into the AIMS AI-Human Framework, linking AI mechanisms, institutional and human outcomes, moderating governance responses, and sustainability capability development, to support sustainability-oriented capability development.
