Abstract:

The remarkable increment in the number of women in higher education is a global phenomenon, although it is not reflected in some careers, especially those related to science and technology. In recent decades, and given the increasing relevance of these fields of knowledge for the development of societies, there has been a growing number of research projects aimed at explaining this phenomenon and, consequently, propose courses of action to overcome it. The presentation will offer a general analysis of the main problems under study, its most prevalent theoretical interpretations and the orientations for action that directly or indirectly arise from its findings. In particular, it will share initiatives developed by the UNESCO Regional Chair Women, Science and Technology in Latin America, which address gender equality in S&T both in education (STEAM programs with a gender equality approach) and in programs and policies at higher education institutions (ACT on Gender - INSPIRE projects).
