Abstract:Based on a review of the literature and interviews conducted between 2009 and 2011 with Mozambican migrants and members of their families, this chapter investigates some of the main characteristics of labour migration as well as the importance of remittances for the livelihoods of Mozambican households in the post-apartheid period. It then identifies some of the ways that can be explored in order to make the most of the potential of migration and remittances for development , instead of the prevalent dependent relationship . The chapter raises some of the challenges in the formulation of a regional labour migration policy that could promote the use of remittances for development.
