Abstract:

The continuously evolving Artificial Intelligence (AI) artefacts are transforming every aspect of our daily lives. Education is centric to improving citizen’s quality of life, hence there is a growing demand to find AI-based artefacts to transform learning and teaching processes, educational settings, learning outcomes, to mention but a few. Yet, the complexity and the scale of Artificial Intelligence developments represent a challenge for effective adoption of AI in education. On the one hand, it might increase the accessibility to personalised and satisfactory learning experiences. On the other hand, challenges like bias, privacy and digital divide exacerbate the difficulties of effective application of artificial intelligence in education. This paper presents a holistic examination of artificial Intelligence in education theories, models, and artefacts from an application perspective. It derives a framework that supports the provision of high-quality education and consequently help meeting the Sustainable Development Gaols (SDG), especially SDG four, i.e., Quality Education. The presented framework paves the ground to merge research initiatives and efforts in order to respond to the expanding research gap in relation to the role of effective use of AI in education in specific and our life in general. In addition, it will recommend few directions to develop contextualised strategies for using AI in education.

Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, Education, Sustainable Development Gaols.
