Summary
Switzerland’s 2026 Voluntary National Review (VNR) presents the country’s progress towards the United Nations’ (UN) 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (SD) and assesses the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through national indicators and the Sustainable Development Goals digital (SDGital2030) assessment. Switzerland’s fourth VNR highlights progress in areas including renewable energy, biodiversity financing, international cooperation and SD partnerships, while also identifying persistent challenges in climate action, biodiversity, affordable housing, inequality, sustainable consumption and international cooperation. In 2024, renewable energy accounted for 29.9% of energy consumption, biodiversity-related expenditure reached CHF 614 million, and 6.7% of Swiss territory was protected at Federal level. At the same time, greenhouse gas emissions stood at 41.3 million tonnes CO₂ equivalent in 2024, while the per-capita material footprint declined from 20 tonnes to 15 tonnes between 2000 and 2023 but remained insufficient to meet the relevant target. The VNR therefore emphasises the need to accelerate implementation, strengthen cooperation across levels of government and society, and align policies and resources more effectively with the 2030 Agenda.
